Benefits of a wood chip boiler

  • Reduced carbon footprint
  • Savings in carbon dioxide emissions are very significant - around 7.5 tonnes a year when a wood-fuelled boiler replaces a solid (coal) fired system or electric storage heating
  • Highly efficient
  • Low fuel costs compared to oil or LPG systems
  • Carbon neutral method of heating your home or business
  • Ideal option for those who have access to own wood
  • Very attractive return on investment, particularly with the non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive
  • Ash can also be used as fertiliser meaning no goes to waste
  • No need to load the boiler with fuel yourself – the automatic fuel feeder will do this for you

How does a wood chip boiler work?

The wood chip boiler is connected to a new or existing heating and hot water system. The system can also be integrated into existing systems (bivalent) to supplement heating. In these circumstances, the wood chip boiler would be used when wood is available, and is backed up by a conventional system to be used when it is not.

Our chip burners use automatic fuel feeders which refill the boilers at regular intervals from fuel storage units called ‘hoppers’ or purpose built storage systems. This means that there is minimal work for you to do in terms to re-fuelling the system so you can sit back and enjoy the warmth!

How much do wood chips cost?

Wood chips cost around £100 per tonne on average. This compares favorably with gas, oil and electricity which can cost considerably more.

Is a wood chip boiler suitable for me?

A wood chip boiler is an ideal option for:

  • Those who want an automated system
  • Those who have access to their own timber supply (for example, those who want to make their own wood chips from their own wood source)

Here are some considerations you will need to make:

  • You need to have space for the fuel store – low density fuel needs a large fuel store.
  • Logistics of chip delivery – you cannot have a blown delivery of chips. The delivery must directly chip into the store, or dump then load with a truck.
